Exclusive: ‘Teen Wolf’s’ new Stiles

FEARnet: Congratulations on the success of the show so far.

Dylan O’Brien: Thanks. I’m glad people are liking it. It’s getting good write-ups.

What was the starting point for you with Teen Wolf?

It was just another audition and it totally conflicted with my schedule. I had an exam so my manager called me and said, “I know, but just read it. We can pass. Don’t stress over it.” I gave it a read through and I loved it. The thing that stood out for me the most was Stiles, because I was supposed to go in for Scott. I fell in love with him.

So Jeff Davis was pretty receptive when you said you wanted to read for Stiles instead?

Yeah. It didn’t go great the first time. I auditioned for Jeff and [director] Russell [Mulcahy]. I was so pumped and I got a little bit of a weird reaction. They didn’t ask me to do it again.

You nailed it.

No, no, I blew it. (Laughs) And then the casting director grabbed me and ran me back in and they asked me to do it again and to [tone it down]. I went deep red and did it again with no energy and then Jeff was like, “We liked it the first time better.” My first audition was such a roller coaster ride of confusion, but I guess it was all for the best.
