Collider: What can you say about where things are going for Stiles, and just how close he’ll get to completely losing his mind?
DYLAN O’BRIEN: Pretty close. It’s stuff I’ve really been working hard on, and it’s my first try at [stuff that dramatic]. It gets worse, for each of us. There literally becomes a point where Stiles is going to check himself into a mental hospital. It’s that bad. We finally pinpoint what’s going on mid-season, but then that just brings on a whole other bag of problems, like how it usually goes on our show. But, it’s done in a really clever, cool way. It was a lot of fun for me, this season. I had a lot of really cool stuff that I’m excited for everybody to see, and I hope goes over well. At the end of the day, it felt good walking away, and it’s just about the experience. It was a really fun season to do, and I think we all feel that way, about the show in general, about each other’s parts, and about our own parts. It’s good. It will be weird, but good.
Is it a little bit harder to find the comic relief, for these episodes?
O’BRIEN: Yes. That’s a good question. That’s one of my main challenges. I never want to lose that essence of the character that I built a foundation on and that I love so much. I get all these tormenting storylines, and I just try to figure it out. Clearly, that changes a person, but I refuse to toss Stiles away, at all. My job then becomes about balancing and trying to blend the humor and the comedy with the horrible, daunting, crazy stuff that’s going on. When he’s going through this season is dramatized, so it’s hard to keep the humor in. But, fans should not fear ‘cause that is always something that’s on my mind. I will never let Stiles get too dramatic. I don’t care what they write for me, I’ll just start cracking jokes. I want him to have that confident energy about him. I love that. I also love that people have every layer possible in them, too. I just hope that the scripts keep everything that I like about Stiles, and that the fans do, too. I basically hope that this season doesn’t make them hate me. The whole time I’m like, “Oh, god, please don’t kill me!”
Do you enjoy getting to include Stiles’ dad on things, now that he knows what’s going on?
O’BRIEN: Oh, my god, it’s so much better. That was such a block for them, and it was so annoying. Now, me and Linden [Ashby] are more of a team again. In Season 1, we were very much a detective tandem, but there was always one piece that I wasn’t telling him, and I was always trying to get stuff out of him that I could use. Now, it just rounds that whole thing out. He’s as aware as I am, so we help each other. He comes for our help, which has never happened, in Teen Wolf history. We always show up at the crime scenes, and he was always telling us to get lost and didn’t understand why we were so interested. It’s a cool dynamic that we have, now that he’s in the know and a part of our team, rather than being in the dark, with us having to constantly keep it that way.
Will the conflict between Scott’s father and Stiles’ father cause tension between Scott and Stiles?
O’BRIEN: No. It’s always cool between them. Nothing can damage that. We don’t even think about toying with that, even for a storyline. It’s just so wrong for the characters and for the show. They’re such brothers. They always have each other’s back. It doesn’t fucking matter what’s happening. They can never lose that. I don’t think Scott and Stiles can ever truly be in a fight. In Season 1, we fought for two minutes. There was one scene where I was mad at him, and then I was just back in it because I want to know what’s going on. Their relationship is the foundation of the show, and we love that foundation. I don’t think anything, even their fathers, can come between that or break that up.
Have you gotten to see The Maze Runner yet?
O’BRIEN: No. I’ve gotten to do some ADR, though, so I’ve gotten to see some. It looks beautiful. I hope that people like it. I really think it looks great, so far. I haven’t seen how the movie came out, but the cinematography looked fucking great when I saw it. I was very happy to see that. I just implicitly trust that director, Wes Ball. I absolutely fell in love with that guy, within a week of shooting. He is one of my favorite people. I would do any movie of his, ever. He’s just got such a great energy. He’s so confidence without ever being cocky. He’s the most likeable, regular dude, who happens to also be a genius, and have a really good feel for film and storytelling. He’s great, and so were the producers and cast. It was so our thing, and we loved it so much. We hope people like it because we had so much fun doing it. The whole cast is in love with the story. I’m in love with the story and characters. We were all really close on the shoot, and we had a great little family. I really hope it does well, just because we all want to go back and do it again, so badly.
After the release date got pushed, were you relieved to learn that they picked up the option on the second book?
O’BRIEN: Totally. And the news that it got pushed is good news, even without the option on the second book. It only means that they’re not trying to spit it out. They’re giving Wes more time to get the cut that he wants. It just means that they’re liking what they see, so they’re investing more into it.
