“The Maze Runner” star Dylan O’Brien wants fans to be prepared for the film series to diverge further from the books in the upcoming sequel, “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.”
“We strayed a little from the book, so I hope [the fans] are cool with that because we still have plenty of stuff from the book in there,” O’Brien says to Zap2it before the “Teen Wolf” panel at Paleyfest 2015.
While O’Brien wasn’t specific about what changes were made from the book to the film, he did say that he feels good about what they were able to capture and he delivered his best for fans of the book series and the first film.
“I walked away every day proud,” he says. “That’s all I can worry about. I can’t worry if the movie is good too.”
The second book in James Dashner young adult series picks up after Thomas (O’Brien) and his friends have escaped from their prison maze called “The Glade.” Now they must make their way through their disease-ravaged world to figure out why they’re being experimented on and to have a chance at surviving The Flare — a deadly virus that slowly erodes one’s humanity.
The first movie, “The Maze Runner,” also diverged from the source material, notably by playing down the romance between Thomas and Theresa (Kaya Scodelario) to focus on their attempts to get out of the maze. In “The Scorch Trials” Thomas meets another potential love interest in Brenda (Rosa Salazaar) though, so the film series has some catching up to do if they plan to stay true to the series’ love triangle.
The film wrapped production in January and is still in the early stages of editing, so O’Brien can’t weigh in on the final cut yet.
“We just wrapped shooting a month ago. They’ve only been cutting it for that long, so I haven’t seen it. I think it’s great though,” O’Brien says. “I feel like we accomplished something every day. I just have to be happy with the experience, and I am, so that’s the icing on the cake.”
“The Scorch Trials” hits theaters on Sept. 18.

It’s no secret Teen Wolf couple Stiles and Malia aren’t your typical lovey dovey pair.

In a recent interview, Shelley Hennig, who plays Malia on the show, said the duo would “never say I love you,” for example. Every now and then, though, they do kiss…and there was one time that smooch fest ended up in a major gross out moment on set.

“We shared spit,” she told us exclusively at the 2015 Paley Fest Honoring MTV’s Teen Wolf event Tuesday. “There was a spit line between our mouths last week and that was the only shot they got of that. So, it will probably air and we can all look forward to seeing some spit string between Dylan and I. Our job is glamorous.”

“I feel like it’s happened multiple times and not just once, but yes, that happened recently,” Dylan added about the incident. “It was funny because we were doing a funny kiss – it’s written that [Malia] kisses wildly – and the director asked us to be sweeter. On that one, we were taking it so seriously, broke apart and had this huge spit string. But…you get over it. You’re kissing for work.”

Shelley went on to elaborate on the duo’s relationship, saying Stiles and Malia have a “very non-traditional relationship.” She added, “They’re not as touchy feely in the way we perceive other couples to be in movies and on television, and that’s what I love about this relationship. They have their own way of showing their love for each other. There’s a little more edge to it and understanding.”

As far as what fans can expect from Malia this season, Shelley said, “I think she’s going to stay true to who she is. She doesn’t know any different. She’s spent a lot of time as a coyote. She’s still transitioning into human life. I think at the end of the day she’s still going to be that quirky Malia, but I think there’s going to be a lot of maturity happening.

EXCLUSIVE: With a box office take of over $340M worldwide, The Maze Runnergot off to a great start last fall becoming another film franchise for 20th Century Fox. Now, with two films already under their belt, word comes that T.S. Nowlin, who co-scripted the first movie and scripted the second installment, just sealed a deal to pen a third. All are based on James Dashner’s bestselling YA series.

The first Maze Runner, which starred relative newcomers Dylan O’Brien and Ki Hong Lee, grossed over $100M domestically and $238M internationally — well enough to introduce the property and the actors to overseas audiences. With that in pocket, the studio jumped into the second film with TheMaze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which is in post production and is scheduled to bow September 18. Wes Ball directed both and Nowlin will get sole writing credit on the second, and has an exec producer credit. The third is called The Maze Runner: The Death Cure.

According to various internetreports, 23-year-old Teen Wolf actor Dylan O’Brien is already set to play Spider-Man. The rumors emerged less than a month after Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced that the franchise would reboot a second time with a new actor so the character can join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the very least, O’Brien has been pegged as one of the leading contenders for the role, along with The Perks of Being a Wallflower star Logan Lerman.

According to O’Brien, however, he hasn’t even auditioned for the role.

“Professionally, I haven’t heard anything about it,” the actor told BuzzFeed News on Tuesday while on the set of Teen Wolf. “I’ve only heard from, like, [rumors] online.”

O’Brien said he has no idea where or how the reports originated. “It feels so weird to say,” he added with a laugh. “It’s so funny. My friends from New Jersey are calling me. They’re like, what are you not telling me, dude?! Spider-Man?!”

The interest in O’Brien slipping into the Spidey suit is understandable, given the actor’s internet-savvy fanbase that’s grown thanks to his roles as Stiles in Teen Wolfand Thomas in Maze Runner. (O’Brien recently wrapped shooting The Scorch Trials, the second film in a planned Maze Runner trilogy.)

Those fans have apparently made O’Brien somewhat reluctant to debunk the rumor. “It makes me feel bad because I’m, like, disappointing a big chunk of fans across the nation,” he said. “You can tell them that it’s not true.”

Which is not to say that O’Brien is not interested in the role. “It’s nothing but flattering. It’s never something I would want to get myself excited about, since I know I haven’t heard about it from a professional standpoint,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to play Peter Parker, obviously. I feel like any actor my age, that’s, like, a big thing. And my name being tossed with Logan Lerman’s is the coolest thing ever, too. I just think that kid is fucking fantastic.”

He laughed. “It’s really just, you know, I guess I’ll see if I even hear about it? But thank you, internet, for giving me false hope!”
