Dylan Hopes ‘The Scorch Trials’ fans Are OK With Movies VS. Book Change

“The Maze Runner” star Dylan O’Brien wants fans to be prepared for the film series to diverge further from the books in the upcoming sequel, “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.”
“We strayed a little from the book, so I hope [the fans] are cool with that because we still have plenty of stuff from the book in there,” O’Brien says to Zap2it before the “Teen Wolf” panel at Paleyfest 2015.
While O’Brien wasn’t specific about what changes were made from the book to the film, he did say that he feels good about what they were able to capture and he delivered his best for fans of the book series and the first film.
“I walked away every day proud,” he says. “That’s all I can worry about. I can’t worry if the movie is good too.”
The second book in James Dashner young adult series picks up after Thomas (O’Brien) and his friends have escaped from their prison maze called “The Glade.” Now they must make their way through their disease-ravaged world to figure out why they’re being experimented on and to have a chance at surviving The Flare — a deadly virus that slowly erodes one’s humanity.
The first movie, “The Maze Runner,” also diverged from the source material, notably by playing down the romance between Thomas and Theresa (Kaya Scodelario) to focus on their attempts to get out of the maze. In “The Scorch Trials” Thomas meets another potential love interest in Brenda (Rosa Salazaar) though, so the film series has some catching up to do if they plan to stay true to the series’ love triangle.
The film wrapped production in January and is still in the early stages of editing, so O’Brien can’t weigh in on the final cut yet.
“We just wrapped shooting a month ago. They’ve only been cutting it for that long, so I haven’t seen it. I think it’s great though,” O’Brien says. “I feel like we accomplished something every day. I just have to be happy with the experience, and I am, so that’s the icing on the cake.”
“The Scorch Trials” hits theaters on Sept. 18.

‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ Confirmed & Sets T.S. Nowlin To Pen

EXCLUSIVE: With a box office take of over $340M worldwide, The Maze Runnergot off to a great start last fall becoming another film franchise for 20th Century Fox. Now, with two films already under their belt, word comes that T.S. Nowlin, who co-scripted the first movie and scripted the second installment, just sealed a deal to pen a third. All are based on James Dashner’s bestselling YA series.

The first Maze Runner, which starred relative newcomers Dylan O’Brien and Ki Hong Lee, grossed over $100M domestically and $238M internationally — well enough to introduce the property and the actors to overseas audiences. With that in pocket, the studio jumped into the second film with TheMaze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which is in post production and is scheduled to bow September 18. Wes Ball directed both and Nowlin will get sole writing credit on the second, and has an exec producer credit. The third is called The Maze Runner: The Death Cure.
